Liberty Double Eagles
1851-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Variety 3. A large mintage of 315,000 Liberty double eagles was accomplished at the New Orleans Mint in 1851, but the coins were all released into circulation at the time of issue. Accordingly, the 1851-O can be located with little difficulty in lower circulated grades and it is a popular choice of branch mint type collectors, but really high-grade specimens are seldom encountered. Although a small number of coins have been recovered from modern shipwreck finds, and 10 specimens surfaced in the Baltimore Hoard in 1934, the 1851-O Liberty double eagle remains an elusive issue in all Mint State grades.
The vivid orange-gold surfaces of this Choice AU specimen show the expected number of minor abrasions for the grade, with traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. The design elements were strongly impressed and show just a touch of wear on the high points. The mintmark is centered over the N in TWENTY, identifying the scarce Variety 3. The overall presentation is quite attractive. Population: 47 in 55, 27 finer (11/16).
