Liberty Double Eagles
1854 $20 Small Date MS61 NGC. The Small Date variety makes up the vast majority of the surviving 1854 double eagle population, but the issue becomes surprisingly rare in Mint State. Most Uncirculated examples are also heavily abraded, grading MS61 or lower. Our Permanent Auction Archives list only 31 offerings of a Mint State coin in more than two decades (including reappearances) almost all of which graded MS60 to MS61 or were cleaned and otherwise damaged. We have seen only four coins in MS62, and the sole finest example of the date ever offered at auction was an MS63 NGC coin in our 2000 FUN Signature sale. Today, PCGS lists a lone Gem as the finest of the issue, which has never been offered at auction.
The current offering grades "only" MS61, but without any singular abrasions, it produces visual appeal reminiscent of a finer grade. A loupe reveals mild field chatter that limits the grade. This piece is sharply struck and displays satiny yellow-gold luster. An outstanding opportunity for the collector seeking this date in rarely seen Mint condition. Census: 19 in 61, 7 finer (11/16).
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
