Liberty Double Eagles
1855-S $20 MS61 NGC. Medium S. This coin offers far greater overall eye appeal than the numeric grade of MS61 suggests. Couple that with considerable historic appeal, and this piece emerges as a prime offering. It was struck in only the second year of operation of the San Francisco Mint. As might be expected for a new Western outlet for tons of freshly mined gold, the production of the 1855-S double eagle was plentiful, a total of 879,675 pieces. The loser in the long run was New Orleans, which saw diminishing double eagle mintages until the Civil War ended its production altogether until the small 1879-O issue.
This piece shows the familiar "Slanted 5s" in the date, and the surfaces are clean for the grade, except for a few abrasions that are mostly well-hidden in Liberty's hair. Orange-gold and green-gold compete for territory over surfaces that retain much luster. A loupe reveals scattered, trivial hairlines in keeping with the grade, and the strike is uniformly bold throughout. Census: 13 in 61, 11 finer (11/16).
