Liberty Double Eagles
1856-S $20 AU58 PCGS. The salvage of the S.S. Central America treasure yielded more than 1,000 examples of the 1856-S double eagle, making a major condition rarity suddenly very collectible in high grade. Nonetheless, an eager market has long driven strong demand for any gold coin issues connected to the famous shipwreck of 1857. This near-Mint example is well-detailed and shows no obvious wear. The bright yellow-gold surfaces are satiny and lightly abraded, as one would expect considering the grade. Although not pedigreed to the Central America, this piece displays surface characteristics suggestive of a coin from the underwater cache.
