Liberty Double Eagles
1856-S $20 MS61 NGC. Outstanding eye appeal for the grade. The devices are sharp and frosty, and the fields are satiny. Both surfaces are essentially brilliant with a hint of olive-gold iridescence. Examples of such outstanding quality were once very elusive until modern technology enabled treasure hunters to locate old shipwrecks in deep water; some of these shipwrecks have yielded up large numbers of 19th-century gold coins and ingots of immense value. Many of the Uncirculated 1856-S double eagles now available were originally discovered several years ago aboard the S.S. Central America which was discovered off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. There is no designation on the NGC label, however, indicating that this piece is from that source.
