Liberty Double Eagles
1857-O $20 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. After three years of record-low production, the New Orleans increased double eagle output to a respectable 30,000 coins in 1857. Examples are difficult to come by, but they are nowhere near as rare as their predecessors. Bright surfaces display pale yellow-gold coloration and glimpses of semiprooflike reflectivity. While the hair curls are incomplete, full centers and radials are visible on the stars. Myriad field marks occur throughout. A pleasing example of this scarce Southern gold issue.
