Liberty Double Eagles
1859-S $20 AU58 NGC. CAC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Repunching is apparent on 18 in the date. A total of 60 1859-S double eagles were found on board the S.S. Republic, but only one was in mint condition (MS61). This piece ranks among the finest coins from that hoard, and few examples derived from any source survive in higher grades. This near-Mint twenty has the look of an Uncirculated coin with radiant frost, though the slightest trace of friction on the cheek prevents such a designation. Well-struck and lightly marked with luminous straw-gold coloration. NGC reports 22 finer submissions (11/16).
