Liberty Double Eagles
1862-S $20 AU58 NGC. CAC. While Civil War hoards removed gold and silver coinage from circulation in much of the country, the West Coast was comparatively unaffected and substantial mintages continued for most denominations. Double eagles were stalwarts of trade and commerce. A mintage of 854,173 twenties was produced by the San Francisco Mint in 1862, some of which survive to this day in high grades. This near-Mint example retains nearly full mint luster with attractive orange-gold toning and grayish overtones. Sharply struck and only lightly abraded, the coin is CAC endorsed. Census: 156 in 58, 34 finer. CAC: 27 in 58, 7 finer (11/16).
