Liberty Double Eagles
1868-S $20 AU58 PCGS. Despite the mintage of 837,500 pieces, the 1868-S Liberty double eagle is a challenging issue in high grade. Like most Type Two double eagles, the 1868-S is most often seen in lower circulated grades and Mint State specimens are rare. The present coin is an attractive near-Mint example, with just a trace of high-point wear on the well-detailed design elements. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, aside from a diagonal scratch near star 5 and a horizontal mark in the lower obverse field, near the throat. Population: 79 in 58 (2 in 58+), 35 finer (10/16).
