Liberty Double Eagles
1869-S $20 MS61 NGC. Most of the generous 1869 San Francisco production approaching 700,000 pieces survives in the grades of Very Fine to About Uncirculated. Mint State examples are highly elusive in the MS60 to MS62 range and are excessively rare any finer. Still, the 1869-S double eagle is one of the few Type Two twenties from the 1860s that is somewhat available in Mint State. The frosty, peach-gold surfaces of this MS61 coin display nice mint luster throughout both sides. The design elements are relatively well-impressed, although the centers on the left-side stars are soft. A few minuscule marks contribute to the assigned grade. Census: 37 in 61 (1 in 61+), 22 finer (11/16).
