Liberty Double Eagles
1872-CC $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-B. The wide mintmark placement and spikes from the denticles above CA are diagnostic. About 1.5% of the 26,900-coin mintage is believed to have survived (roughly 400 to 450 pieces). The average certified representative grades somewhere between XF45 and AU50. This About Uncirculated double eagle from the early period of Carson City coinage displays light orange-gold color and good detail with merging over stars 1 to 4 and Liberty's hair strands. Partial luster glitters from within the recesses of this pleasing semikey, and myriad marks occur throughout. A nice example of a challenging Type Two issue.
