Liberty Double Eagles
1872-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 2-A. The 1 in the date nearly touches the bust, and the CC mintmark is narrowly spaced over the N. It should come as no surprise to students of this series that the 1872-CC is scarce across the board. The issue circulated extensively in the West, and was not exactly produced to a great degree. Only 26,900 double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1872, up from 17,387 coins the year before. The 1872-CC is the first obtainable Nevada double eagle after the exceedingly elusive 1871-CC and the uncollectible 1870-CC. Bright yellow-gold surfaces house myriad marks, and the central devices are somewhat incomplete. However, the stars show full radial lines and flashes of luster appear within the recesses. A small edge bump occurs at 2 o'clock on the obverse.
