Liberty Double Eagles
1876-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 3-D. The Carson City Mint produced 138,441 double eagles in the centennial year, minted from a combination of seven obverse dies and four reverse dies, creating 10 documented die varieties. The Wide CC reverse seen here was only used in one of the 10 combinations, and was called Very Rare by Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia. We examined 70 Mint State examples of this issue that appeared in our Permanent Auction Archives, and found seven examples of the Wide CC variety. This piece has reflective surfaces with fully brilliant luster and a few faint hairlines and surface marks on each side. Perhaps not the rarity that Breen suggested, but still an extremely important Carson City double eagle.
