Liberty Double Eagles
1878-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1878-CC is among the more challenging Type Three Carson City issues in the series, and in Mint State, it is the rarest, just edging out the 1879-CC and 1885-CC for that honor. Coming from a small 13,180-coin mintage, this is not all that surprising. Frequent auction appearances for this issue reflect an active trading market brought about by strong collector demand, not necessarily ample quantities of the issue being available. Of the coins seen at auction over the past couple of decades, most have resided in XF or lower AU grades; we have handled only a single Mint State piece, a heavily abraded Prooflike coin more than a decade ago.
This Choice XF representative displays substantially more original luster than expected for the grade, and the design elements are sharp with minimal blending. Light surface chatter accompanies rich yellow-gold patina. Eye appeal exceeds expectations. Housed in a green label holder.
