Liberty Double Eagles
1885-CC $20 AU53 PCGS Secure. Variety 1-A. "The 1885-CC issue is scarce; in fact, it is one of the rarest Carson City double eagles struck in the 1880s": Thus begins the narrative on the 1885-CC twenty in Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins. This issue comes from a low mintage of 9,450 pieces. Survivors largely originated in overseas hoards, residuals of trade exports from more than a century ago. Circulated examples today are more or less evenly distributed through the VF, XF, and AU grade levels, with Mint State pieces being rare. The present coin is in AU, showing partially lustrous fields and bright yellow-gold patina. The devices are well-detailed. Scattered abrasions on each side are typical of the grade.
