1890 $20 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, Unc Details. The 1890 proof twenty is very rare in any condition. Only 55 proofs were struck and assuming half that number have survived today, that still leaves only two dozen or so in all grades. This is a bright yellow-gold example that shows deeply reflective fields on each side. A slight cameo effect can also be seen against the lightly frosted devices. In addition to the depth of mirrors that make this an obvious proof, the fields also display the slight rippling "orange-peel" effect seen on many proof gold coins struck in the latter half of the 19th century. The Altered Surfaces designation apparently refers to the extensively marked fields. Curious, none of the marks are large. In fact, they are all tiny but they densely populate the fields. Still, an affordable entry-level piece of proof gold.
