Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1908-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Only a single delivery of double eagles, amounting to 22,000 coins, was accomplished by the San Francisco Mint in 1908, delivered in August of that year. These were not released into circulation until September, per new research by Roger Burdette. The 1908-S is an oddity in the series as a date for which there are more circulated pieces known than Mint State. Once a boom region for gold and silver mining, the Western states retained a preference for circulating gold even while Eastern states were becoming increasingly accustomed to paper currency, backed by gold in a government vault. The high-end Mint State coins known today are thought to have been acquired directly from the San Francisco Mint.
The present MS62 example displays a sharp strike and satiny yellow-gold luster. Scattered abrasions determine the grade, but none are individually distracting. Eye appeal is pleasing for the MS62 level.
