Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1924-S $20 MS64 NGC. Slightly more than 1,000 1924-S Saints are believed to survive, mostly with light or heavy abrasions. Small remainders of Annual Assay Commission coins likely produced the higher-grade pieces on the market, with the remainder coming from overseas hoards or Western circulation. The Mint distributed about a quarter-million examples to Federal Reserve Banks, but no comparable quantities were ever released into domestic commerce. Today, the 1924-S double eagle is a great rarity in Gem condition and experiences strong demand at the Choice level from budget-restricted collectors.
The present near-Gem offers a bold strike and satiny yellow-gold mint luster. Light, scattered contact marks determine the grade, but none are bothersome to the unaided eye. NGC records 21 numerically finer examples, PCGS just six (10/16).
