Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1928 $20 MS66+ PCGS. The 1928 has the highest mintage of any U.S. gold coin: 8,816,000 pieces. Undoubtedly, the majority of the production never left Treasury vaults, and was eventually melted. But unlike (for example) the 1927-S, a significant percentage of the mintage did survive, predominantly held as bank reserves in Europe and South America. Those coins typically returned to the United States during the second half of the 20th century. High grade examples, such as the present piece, are coveted by gold type collectors. This is crisply struck and lustrous pumpkin-gold Premium Gem. Smooth aside from two brief horizontal lines on the front wing and southeast of Liberty's branch.
