Territorial Gold
(1834-37) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 28G. Centered AU50 PCGS. K-3, R.6. Christopher Bechtler's home-based private mint in Rutherfordton, North Carolina filled an important need for local gold miners and the local economy. The operation soon won the trust of the gold-mining interests throughout the state as well as in Georgia and the surrounding areas. Founded in 1831, the Bechtler mint issued denominations ranging from gold dollars to half eagles, carefully assayed to conform to federal guidelines based on the composition of local gold dust. This gold dollar was struck in the period from 1834 to 1837. Diagnostically, 28.G. is centered in the field, a differentiating factor from the K-2 variety with it high in the field. A similar issue, K-4, has the N in ONE reversed -- a more popular, but less-scarce issue than this About Uncirculated K-3 example. Reflective surfaces display a greenish-gold tinge, with the thin planchet slightly dished as often seen. Small abrasions and a couple of minor rim irregularities are secondary to the overall appeal. Population (K-3 variety): 4 in 50, 14 finer (10/16).
