Territorial Gold
1834 $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, RUTHERFORD, Plain Edge, XF45 PCGS. K-17, R.5. A Choice representative of a scarce five dollar Bechtler issue, with all of the elements boldly struck and little actual wear. This coin shows the variety with the numeral 20 close to CARATS. Bechtler coinage was typically overweight in comparison to federal gold standards. These five dollar coins -- issued in the period from 1834 to 1837 -- contained 140 grains of 20-carat gold, yielding an excess of gold at a rate of about .5 percent to standard. Both sides display attractive, reddish-gold coloration. Considerable prooflike flash remains. A few shallow abrasions are noted on the date side, although none of the marks are distracting. Listed on page 389 of the 2017 Guide Book.
