1855 $20 Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU55 NGC. K-3c, R.5. A shortage of parting acids and other growing pains slowed production at the San Francisco Mint in its early years and private assay firms were sometimes called upon to fill the void in coinage operations during 1854 and 1855. The well-regarded firms of Kellogg & Co. and Wass, Molitor & Co. both issued private gold coinage during this period, including the popular 1855 Kellogg twenty dollar piece offered here.
The elusive K-3c variety was discovered after Don Kagin published his series reference. The K-3c employs the Short Arrows reverse, and the obverse shows the O in CO embedded in Liberty's hair, like the more familiar K-3b, but the date placement differs, with all the digits located left of the curl. This attractive Choice AU specimen shows just a trace of wear on the high points of the well-detailed design elements and the lustrous orange-gold surfaces show the normal number of minor abrasions for the grade. Listed on page 402 of the 2017 Guide Book. Census: 16 in 55, 27 finer (11/16)..
