THRACIAN KINGDOM. Scostocus (ca. 260-245 BC). AR tetradrachm (28mm, 17.01 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 4/5. Kabyle, in the name and types of Lysimachus of Thrace. Diademed head of Alexander the Great right, with horn of Ammon / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, left elbow on shield, holding Nike in right hand, transverse spear behind; globe on pillar in inner left field. Fischer-Bossert, RBN 151 (2005), 20 (same dies). Rare! Struck in high relief and beautifully toned.

This Lysimachus-type tetradrachm is die-linked to a series of coins struck with the name of Scostocus, an otherwise unknown Thracian dynast of the mid-third century BC. After the long, tumultuous reign of the Macedonian Lysimachus, Thrace reverted to the rule of dynasts from the powerful Odrysian tribe, who maintained a hold on the region until it became a Roman client kingdom in the 1st century BC.

Estimate: 2500-3000 USD
