Severus Alexander (AD 222-235). AR denarius (19mm, 3.07 gm, 11h) NGC Choice XF 5/5-2/5. Rome, AD 229. IMP SEV ALE-XAND AVG, laureate head of Alexander right / P M TR P VIII COS III P P, Alexander, wearing consular robes and holding scepter, in consular quadriga walking right. RIC 99 (referring to cast in BN). BMCRE 575 note (same). Extremely rare, likely the second or third known example! Somewhat granular surfaces.
Both RIC and BMC refer to a solitary cast in Paris as the only evidence for this intriguing type, evidently struck to celebrate Alexander's eighth consulship. Another example (possibly the model for the Paris cast) was offered by Nomos on 23 October 2013 (realizing SF 3,600); this would then appear to be the second or third known specimen.
