Manuel I Comnenus (1143-1180). EL aspron trachy (34mm, 4.30 gm, 6h). NGC MS★ 5/5 - 4/5. Thessalonica. The Virgin, nimbate, enthroned facing, wearing pallium and maphorium, holding nimbate head of infant Christ before her; on either side of bust, MHP (ligate) - QV / MANUHΛ ΔЄCΠOTH, Manuel (on left) and St. Demetrius (on right) standing facing, holding between them labarum; the emperor wears crown, divitision, and chlamys, and holds akakia; St. Demetrius wears military attire; to right, Θ/Δ/H/M/H/TPI/O/S. DOC 9. SB 1974. A well-struck and virtually flawless example, on an enormous flan. Just an astounding coin!
