Austria
Albert II (1330-1358) Goldgulden ND MS62 NGC, Judenburg mint, Fr-1, De Mey-256. DVX • ALB | ERTVS, Florentine lily / + S • IOHA | NNES • B (Arms), St. John standing holding scepter and raising hand in benediction. A handsome example of this first gold issue from Austria imitating the Florentine Fiorino d'oro, lustrous with just a touch of softness to be found in the centers. After a nearly 600 year absence of gold coinage in Central Europe, the spread of the Florin through trade from Genoa and Florence following its introduction in 1252 ignited a flurry of imitative types throughout Europe in the 14th Century, beginning primarily in Bohemia and then spreading west through Austria and Hungary into the German dominions.
