Azores
Portuguese Colony Counterstamped 1200 Reis ND (1887) MS63 NGC, KM-Unl. An unlisted type--quite possibly unique--featuring the crowned "GP" counterstamp on a Congo Free State 5 Francs. Per the March 31, 1887 decree regarding countermark coinage circulating throughout the Azores, all foreign coins were to be stamped with the crowned "GP" (Governo Protugues) countermark within a circle. Typically these stamps are found on host coins from Portugal or Brazil, and while there are a few other noted examples from additional host countries, it appears that this may be the first available issue struck upon a Congo Free State coin. The host itself (KM8.1) is a somewhat desirable issue on its own, featuring the bust of Leopold II with crowned arms supported by lions and surfaces that are for the most part pristine with champagne luster residing in the fields. The Azores stamp was struck directly over the King's cheek, with the crown fully bold and the "GP" monogram only partially visible. An exciting example in all regards.

Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
