Louis XV gold Louis d'or 1724-Z MS62 NGC, Grenoble mint, KM470.24, Fr-459, Gad-339 (R3). A superior example of this extremely scarce, two-year type that was struck at the Grenoble mint, presenting the young, long-haired bust of Louis XV and crowned, double L monogram reverse motif. The overall surfaces are visually outstanding, with creamy, honeyed color in the open fields and just a touch of russet color that highlights the outer registers. The boldness of the devices is easily witnessed, with sharply-portrayed detail across the King's features as well as a defined crispness throughout the legends. Presently tied with only one other selection in this top certification, and as such, a model representative of the issue.
