William IV gold Sovereign 1831 MS62 NGC, Royal mint, KM717, S-3829. First bust, "W.W." incuse. As the first year of this short-lived series, this low-mintage issue features the bare head of William IV and reverse coat of arms. Almost immediately, the eye is drawn to the obverse--as light tone that has that has collected around the King's effigy, producing a slightly three-dimensional effect--followed by the reverse, which is equally impressive and complimentary, with spectacular luster that whirls about, showering the center motif in a rich, golden glow. This date is typically encountered in Proof, so a Mint-State example such as this is sure to garner much attention.

Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
