Victoria silver Diamond Jubilee Medal 1897 AU - Polished, by F. Bowcher of Spink & Son, 38mm, BHM-3523. An unfortunately polished example of this Spink issue gifted by Queen Victoria to her grandson, Prince Edward of York who would one day rule England briefly as King Edward VIII, on his third birthday. It was displayed along with his other medals in a green felt-covered obelisk in his home. The edge is inscribed: H.R.H. PRINCE EDWARD OF YORK. 23rd JUNE 1897. There is also an accession number following the inscription in white paint. This medal belonged to the author of "Portraits of a Prince" by Joseph S. Giordano Jr. and is the plate coin for this type in his catalog. This lot includes photocopies of the catalog listings from its sale at Sotheby's and the Giordano catalog as well as its mention in an article concerning the Duke's medal collection by Philip Attwood. Also included is the auction tag from Sotheby's.
