India
British India. Bengal Presidency gilt-silver Medal 1799 SP62 PCGS, Soho mint, by C.H. Küchler, Eimer-903a. A beautifully toned example of this scarce East India Company issue given after 1808 to veterans of the siege and capture of Seringapatam in 1799. The dramatic obverse engraving depicts a British Lion subduing a tiger, the symbol of the forces of Tippoo Sultan who suffered defeat in the siege, which is depicted on the reverse. The composition of the medals handed out were determined by rank, with the gilt-silver pieces being given explicitly to British field-grade officers.
