India
British India. Indian Mines gold Medallic 5 Tolas ND (c. early 20th century) UNC, Bombay mint, cf. KMX-27. 31mm/57.68g. .9995 fine. Struck by H.M. Mint in Bombay for Indian Mines. A very rare, larger denomination for the issue, with extreme reflectivity in the fields and a large die crack running across the reverse surfaces. After striking, the fineness, weight in tolas and serial number was applied by stamp. The first example of this denomination we have seen, and only the third of the type in circular form, with one of the other examples being a .9 tola (.378 AGW) that sold in a September 2013 Goldberg auction for $1,150 hammer. This example, at over 5 times the weight, should generate far greater interest.
