Papal States. Pius VI gold Medal 1791 Anno XVII AU - Cleaned, by Giovanni Hamerani, 40mm, 28.92g, Bart-E 791, Patrignani-74c. Struck in commemoration upon the draining of a portion of the Pontine Marshes for agriculture, this rare type is a well-struck representation of beautiful engraving, despite the cleaning hairlines to be found throughout the surfaces. The reverse features a personification of the Pontine Marshes surrounded by fields and farm implements, bearing sheaves of wheat and a cornucopia of plenty. Ultimately, Pius' attempt at draining the marshes was unsuccessful and would not be permanently accomplished until the 1930's.
