Danzig. Wladislaw IV gold Medal 1637 XF Details (Plugged) PCGS, Danzig mint, 47mm, 41.41g, by Johann Höhn, HCz-1774 (misattributed on PCGS insert as HCz-1871), Dutkowski/Suchanek-560a. Struck to commemorate political advantages gained by Wladislaw over the Russians, Turks, and Swedes, this example is beautifully engraved like so much of Höhn's work. The obverse features Hercules facing Cerberus with clear allusion to Wladislaw facing the three aforementioned adversaries and a reverse inscription in a charming arabesque. The surfaces are fairly typical of an ex-jewelry piece, with some evidence of wear and polish to go with the plug. The major devices remain clear without evidence of damage.
