Alexander III "Opening of the New Canal Between the Wytegra and Kovzha Rivers" silver Medal 1886 SP63 PCGS, unsigned, Diakov-975.1 (R3), Smirnov-918, 83mm. Obv. Center portrait of Alexander III surrounded by portraits of Peter I, Paul I, Alexander II, and Maria Feodorovna. Rev. Topographical map of the new canal and surrounding areas. A superb example of this large commemorative medal. Both sides are boldly struck, in high relief. The obverse exhibits prooflike fields with light golden toning, while the reverse has a matte-like finish with gold-russet patina. Light marks are noted, but the overall appearance is exceptional for the stated grade. Also included is a certificate of authenticity, #5294, from the "Society of Friends of the State Historical Museum" in Moscow.
