Griquatown. British Colony copper 1/4 "Penny" ND (1815-1816) MS63 Brown NGC, KMX-Tn1, Hern-GT4. Warm chocolate brown surfaces and an exceptional strike for issue. A premium example of this classic piece, and a great rarity. Some mystery still surrounds the origins of this and related pieces, designed by Thomas Halliday for the London Mission Society, whose "Dove" emblem occupies the obverse, each variety undated, and exact time of manufacture remains unknown but is believed to be 1815-16. The denomination is not stated on any of the issues of this organization but these are all generally conceded to be the Penny or Pence series, which would technically make this copper coin a Farthing. This conclusion seems beyond challenge as the coins were made in England for an English colony. A highly interesting and historic piece from South Africa.

Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
