João V gold 12800 Reis 1729-R MS65 NGC, Rio de Janiero mint, KM140, LMB-O195. A famously pedigreed coin, and in all likelihood, the most visually captivating example of this rare issue, with impressive semi-prooflike vibrancy throughout that resulted from its striking with fresh dies. Admirably detailed as well, the bust motif remains sharp and the edge segmentation is coarse on both sides. More concentrated inspection reveals several well-blended marks from handling, as well as several planchet adjustments that didn't completely strike out in and around João's bust, but these imperfections are barely mention-worthy relative to other examples of the date. As the finest certified (tied with one other coin), a landmark opportunity for the collector of large world gold issues.
