Maria I & Pedro III gold 1600 Reis 1780-B MS65 NGC, Bahia mint, KM211, LMB-O471. Astonishing quality for this very rare key date in the series, and unquestionably the finest known, with the only other instance of the date selling in recent years being the Norweb coin that sold as a part of our offering of the RLM Collection, Part I in 2013. That coin, clearly once used in jewelry, displayed heavy tooling over portions of both sides with a plugged hole at 12 o'clock. Despite its obvious imperfections, it realized just over $3,000. In contrast, the present coin remains in an immaculate state, with fully original reflectivity in the fields and eye-catching orange-gold color. The strike is also well-placed, with no marks that hinder viewing. Absolutely a once in a generation (or more!) type of offering, and as such, one that will surely bring specialists in the field to a frenzy.
