Royal Canadian mint, KM-SS43 (missing the 25 cents). A key issue in Specimen format, thought to have been produced in a quantity as little as 30, with each example seen here remaining a lovely Gem; the cent retaining significant mint red color and the other denominations remaining absent all but the most trivial amounts of tone. Although only a partial set, accompanied by a story that adds ample compensation, as the original lot description for this set from the 1999 sale of John Pittman's collection by David Akers includes the anecdote that these coins were originally acquired from Maurice LaFortune in 1952 and that the now-missing 25 cents was part of the items stolen from Mr. Pittman's home in 1964 (along with a 1936 dot cent!...this coin was later returned) that were never returned. All in all, a fascinating collectible that deserves proud placement inside an advanced Canadian cabinet.
