Napoleon 5 Francs L'An 12-A (1803/1804) MS65 NGC, Paris mint, KM 659.1. An unconditional Gem that theoretically shouldn't exist at this esteemed level of presentation. The planchet is phenomenal, showing tinges of mauve that brighten the mostly dove-gray surfaces and golden hues that have surrounded the design illustrations, producing a three-dimensional outcome throughout. The obverse portrait is beyond bold--showing a full impression that leaves Napoleon's facial features completely nuanced, and the effects of chiaroscuro are noted throughout his effigy. Unsurprisingly, this selection is the only certified example of the type, likely one of the finest survivors extant, and as such, a coin that could easily be the centerpiece of its next cabinet.

Estimate: 7000-9000 USD
