French Colony Proof Piastre 1889-A PR67 NGC, Paris mint, KM5, Lec-271. Mintage: 100. A Superb Gem of this world-renowned French colonial Seated Liberty issue, produced in extremely limited qualities as a proof, and as a result of its multi-ethnic appeal, sought broadly around the globe by advanced collectors of crown-sized issues. The present example, perhaps the very finest of those that survive, was clearly carefully stored for generations with undiminished, watery reflectivity in the fields and delicate cameo-producing frost on the motifs. Luxurious tone also adorns the surfaces on both sides, with a melange of vivid gold, green and blue color highlighting the raised obverse surfaces, while toning is mostly confined to the peripheries on the reverse. The single finest example of this issue graded by NGC, with two examples receiving the same technical grade at PCGS. To our knowledge, neither of those examples have ever been sold at auction, making this the first PR67 to appear on the market. An important and exciting collector opportunity as such!
