German New Guinea
German Colony. Wilhelm II Proof 5 Mark 1894-A PR66 NGC, Berlin mint, KM7, Jaeger-7. The largest silver denomination issued from this German colony, highly-coveted at all levels, but of particular importance to the specialized collector when encountered at this Gem level of Proof. The surfaces on this selection are beyond beautiful, not just because of the opalescent rainbow tone that weaves itself through the raised features, clustering around the edges, but also because of the outstanding Bird of Paradise design on the obverse that shows the indigenous bird with its plume delicately splayed and each individual feather intricately detailed. Each side contains the same iridescent turquoise, lavender, and golden hues--all of which contrast nicely against the watery steel-gray mirrors--and the viewer is presented with an incredible show once the coin is in hand and rotated. Closer inspection reveals a virtually pristine planchet, further confirming the careful preservation of this miraculous survivor, and as a whole, it is hard to imagine a more alluring coin than this current offering.
