Victoria Proof "Gothic" Florin 1867 PR66 NGC, Royal mint, ESC-2864 (R5). Plain edge. A model representative of this scarce Gothic type that was beautifully conceived by chief engraver William Wyon. The obverse depicts the portrait of Victoria as a young monarch adorned with a jeweled crown, with intricate styling noted throughout her detailed portrait, coiffed hair, and bodice. The reverse devices are equally engaging, showing the crowned shields of England, Scotland and Ireland in cross formation with flowers between, all within a large, plain quatrefoil. As the grade suggests, the surfaces are phenomenal--presenting dove-gray coloration at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they reveal a multitude of iridescent autumnal color accented by flecks of teal. All the while, the reflective mirrors lie still, waiting for rotation, which allows the perfect opportunity to expose the radiant colors on the planchet. A veritable jewel in all regards, this impeccably struck and even more carefully preserved Gem Proof is likely to generate a great deal of attention, all of which is completely warranted.
