Papal States. Pius VII Scudo 1818-B Anno XVIII MS66 NGC, Bologna mint, KM1275. A spectacular representative, essentially pristine, with both sides of the planchet deeply blanketed with clay-brown patination and beautifully rendered designs that have been heavily impressed, producing sharp detail throughout the motifs. The eye is easily satiated as it inspects the elements more closely, and underlying luster brightens the smooth, mark-free surfaces as well as the decoration that comprises the papal arms. For a coin of this size to have remained so well preserved is truly a remarkable feat. Thus, a conditionally choice Gem, and certified as such.
