Sardinia. Vittorio Emanuele I 5 Lire 1819 (Eagle)-L MS65 NGC, Turin mint, KM113, Dav-133, Pag-13. A rare type and extremely rare in the observed quality! A true miracle survivor from the original mintage of 35,297, with every other example of the date that we've seen in archived auction records showing definite signs of circulation. This piece however remains in just about the most original state imaginable, and was certainly set aside almost immediately after striking, with a rich veil of russet, olive and golden patina over surfaces that maintain visibly bright luster. The strike is also impressively crisp with Vittorio Emanuele's hair definition remaining entirely sharp. An absence of marks either on the raised surfaces or in the fields confirms the monumental Gem grade. A truly stunning crown overall, and perhaps a once in a generation opportunity at ownership; a coin that deserves to sit in an elite Italian cabinet.
