Carl XIV Johan Speciedaler 1827/6 MS65 NGC, Kongsberg mint, KM301, Dav-241, Ahlstrom-6A. Miraculous quality for this type and seemingly unparalleled quality for the date. An undeniable Gem, both the obverse and reverse surfaces are caressed by deep shades of graphite and gold tone, yet the underlying luster remains unimpeded, effortlessly circulating the central design. Rising in full completeness, the motifs are also laudable, as Carl XIV Johan's hair curls are formed with pinpoint crispness and the lettering at the edge shows no signs of softness. Perhaps most impressively, the surfaces appear essentially pristine, free of evident post-strike marks on both sides, with a tiny planchet irregularity in the reverse field near 8 o'clock being the only noteworthy imperfection. Easily the finest example graded for the date in the NGC census, with the 1836-dated example in this sale representing the only two MS65s graded for the type. A scan for graded examples of similar quality in European auctions produced similarly limited results. A coin worthy of the finest cabinet.

Estimate: 8000-12000 USD
