Bern. City Taler 1798 MS67★ NGC, KM164, Dav-1760A, HMZ-2218f. Variety with thinner frame. Tone-free throughout, the immediate attention of the viewer is drawn to the juxtaposition between the frosted fields in the peripheries with the sunken, mirrored fields in the centers, both creating a unique cameo appearance against the pinpoint detail of the motifs. When even further inspected, essentially no evidence of abrasive contact with the surfaces is observed. The combination of the Bern bear, the standing warrior on the other side and an altogether progressive design for the period make this taler a constant collector favorite, and in the observed Superb Gem grade, we expect this will only be amplified. Currently the finest example graded at NGC, with the added bonus of the ★ designation (well-deserved) for unusually exceptional eye-appeal.
