MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 500-450 BC. EL stater (21mm, 16.11 gm). NGC AU★ 5/5 - 5/5. Hound crouching left, right fore-paw slightly raised, tunny fish left below / Quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze 93, pl. III, 12. Boston 1469. SNG von Aulock 119. Edge cracks, otherwise boldly struck and an intriguing type with a nicely modeled hound.
By the evidence of coinage, some modern canine breeds have parallels many centuries ago in early classical Greece. The hound on this coin, with its muscled body and triangular snout, closely resembles the bull terrier, although the modern breed was supposedly created in the 18th-19th centuries.
