ACHAEMENID PERSIA. Time of Darius I to Xerxes II (485-420 BC). AV daric (15mm, 8.36 gm). NGC Choice MS★ 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Persian king or hero in kneeling-running position right, holding spear and bow; quiver over shoulder / Rectangular incuse punch. Carradice Type IIIb A/B. A truly wondrous Daric!
Superlatives fail with this piece. The Great King is rendered here in a particularly regal form, his long torso well-proportioned and elaborately draped, with a diagonal fold on his upper torso sharply rendered. His facial features display fierce determination, and his weapons are shown in their entirety -- decidedly rare on coins of this oblong fabric. Surely the best Daric of this type (fifth century BC) we have encountered and among the finest extant.
