From the Collection of Roman Vishniac, acquired in Jerusalem in the late 1940s.

Production of silver coins at the Jerusalem Temple dropped sharply in the fourth year, when the Jewish War against Rome entered its terminal phase and supplies of precious metal dried up. While the number of recorded specimens for the first three years number in the hundreds, only 40 shekels are known from Year 4.

Ramon Vishniac (1897-1990) was a renowned Russian-American photographer, famous for documenting the lives and culture of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. His portraits of famous persons, including Albert Einstein, also gained him widespread recognition. He was a lifelong supporter of Israel and his many interests extended to biology and ancient Judaean coins, of which he assembled a fine representative collection, including this rare Year 4 shekel.

Estimate: 15000-18000 USD
